We barely
survived our first mountain biking trip because our bikes were not up to
snuff. Kerry and I thought that we could easily ride the trails
with the bikes that we had from our undergraduate days (awhile ago),
while the kids were going to negotiate the same trails with their Toys R
Us specials. This was not the way to get into such a fantastic,
exhilarating sport.
On the way home we began our search for real mountain bikes with things like knobby tires, gears and water bottle holders. We found all we needed at the Bike Center in Stockbridge, GA. Soon we were all sporting new equipment. Kayla had a blue Trek 820, Harold on a red Giant Boulder, Kerry atop a Gary Fisher Tassajara and I had a Trek 6000. We all got new helmets of the comfortable high impact kind and then we could challenge the trails. A great trail with many options is the Dauset Nature Mountain Biking Trails. The trail system winds through the woods for miles crisscrossing green, blue and black trails. The rides are named things like the Huff and Puff Trail, Sandy Creek Trail, Bootleggers Trail, Moonshine Trail and Pine Mountain Trail. Each ride takes you through a great area in Jackson, GA where the animals are in abundance. When we are not feeling to ambitious we take a green trail, put the dogs in a baby bike tow behind and they travel with us deep into the woods where we stop for ...you guessed it a picnic. Davidson Acadia offers paved trails that you can follow out to the Stonecrest Mall. The trail is good for an easy ride and markers are along the way to tell you the distance that you have traveled.
