"Adopt the pace of nature:  her secret is patience."

(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

When I was younger I remember the words and images of Woodsy Owl “Give a Hoot and don’t pollute”, Smokey Bear “Even you can prevent forest fires” and who can forget the tear in the indian’s eye.  These represented the outside world, indians and talking wildlife trying to preserve their homes.  Now, we identify with TV’s, computers and video games and not the great outdoors.  In order to appreciate the outside world, one needs to be in it, living amongst the other animals and so there is camping.  We have done our fair share of camping from the Black Forest of Bavaria to the North Sea area in Europe, from the Catskill Mountains in New York to Hunting Island Beach, South Carolina.  Each time there is something unique about the area, the flora, the fauna, the available activities and the even the people around us.  Georgia has some gorgeous areas to camp. We have only been able to see two of them.

Lake Lanier – This was a trip that we took while my wife was away to Sanibel Island.  The five of us (the kids, the dogs and myself) drove toward Lake Lanier because our neighbor told us it was the best camping around.  We found that recommendation to be accurate.

We found a secluded spot in the tent only area of Suwannee Park.  Our site was a five-minute walk to the clean and well-maintained sanitary facilities.  We had our own private beach into Lake Lanier where we all swam for hours.  We had a hard time getting Laddie out of the water since Cairn terriers are water dogs.  We saw a large beaver swimming around our site and a whole variety of birds.  We communicated with them as they went about their business.  This was a great trip.

High Falls Campground – This is one that came highly recommended from all our friends who know we love the outdoors.  The falls, although artificial, is still a nice sight and the roar of the water gives you an appreciation of the power of nature.  The campground is well laid out with ample room between sites and clean facilities.  The staff was very courteous and showed us paths to the river, the playground and the outdoor pool, for those of you that do not like to swim in rivers and lakes.
