EBA605 Marketing Game simulation results:

[Return to DrJEC Home Page]

Check this area for updates each session.

Period 10 is now posted.

The normal process for the Marketing Simulation Game is as follows:

  1. Teams submit their decisions by email by the deadline indicated on the class calendar. The file I need is the one named PlanX#.tmg (X=industry letter and #=team number). For example, if you are Team B3, the file I need is titled PlanB3.tmg. I do not need the "proforma" file or the "report" file. You should keep those for your own reference. The file should be emailed to dr.jec@comcast.net

  2. I will then post the results for that period and send out an email to the class. The three files your team should check out are listed below the important notes.

Note1: If the password box pops up when you click the links below, just click 'cancel' and the file should open.

Note 2: If you don't see the current period info when you open the file, then you need to click on your browser's "refresh" or "reload" button and download the file again.

Note 3: You can only read the individual report files (A1, A2, etc. below) using the Simulation software and the password you selected when you created the plan. If all team members do not have the software, one should download and open the file using the software. Then, they can copy & paste the data into a word file for distribution to the other team members.

    a. Overall Results Chart - This file contains the unit sales and net contribution (profits) for all teams in spreadsheet form. The charts will be updated as each period's results become available. Use MS Excel or other spreadsheet programs to read this file.

    b.  Overall Team Decisions - The following files contain the major decisions made by all teams. Any word processing software should be able read this file.

    Period1    Period2     Period3    Period4    Period5   Period6

    Period7   Period8   Period9   Period10  Period11  Period 12

    c.  Individual Company Report Files  (Download, then use the Marketing Game software and your team password to view your results.):

    A1    A2    A3    A4

Important: If you have trouble accessing any of the files,
please read notes 1-3 above for the answers
    to the most common problems.

    Comments:

Period 1:  Looks like we've got a fairly aggressive bunch on our hands here. Overall, unit sales got off to a strong start but industry-wide profits leave something to be desired. Team A2 is leading in both sales & profits, due in part to their early introduction of Product 2. Each team should carefully review their financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 2:  Some big changes in relative positions, as is typical early in the simulation. Although A2 retains the cumulative lead in both categories, the gap has narrowed significantly. Team A3 is now the current profit leader, while A2 retains the lead in current unit sales. Two teams have now introduced Product 2. Each team should carefully review their financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 3:  Team A3 has a very slight lead in cumulative profits, while A2 has the edge in cumulative sales. A3 has the current profit lead, but A4 is closing fast. In current sales, A2 retains their lead, but A3 is gaining rapidly. Remember to carefully review your financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 4: Team A3 is the cumulative profit leader, while A2 retains the cumulative sales lead. In the current profit trends, Team A3 remains the leader, but A1 is closing the gap quickly and has taken the current unit sales lead. Remember to carefully review your financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 5:  Teams A1 & A3 played a round of 'Trading Spaces'. A1 took the current profit lead from A3, while A3 took the current sales lead from A1. A2 staged a very successful turnaround in both current categories, while A4 continued their steady improvement in profits. Cumulatively, A3 retains the profit lead, while A2 has the sales lead. Remember to carefully review your financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 6:   At the half-way point, Team A3 is the cumulative profit leader, with A1 close behind. The cumulative sales lead is held by A1, with A2 a close second, and A3 rapidly narrowing the gap. In current unit sales, A3 has opened a strong lead with the introduction of their second product. A1 maintained a narrow lead in current profits, even though A3 had a significant boost. Remember to carefully review your financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 7:  Cumulatively, no position changes occurred this period in either sales or profits. In the current sales category, Team A1 has taken the lead from A3, and both A4 & A2 have executed a turnaround and are seeing improved trends. A1 has widened their lead in current profits, while A2 has bounced back to a virtual tie with A4. Remember to carefully review your financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 8: The tide may be turning. In both the current profit and current unit sales categories, A2 & A4 continued to gain ground on A1 & A3. Cumulatively, A1 & A3 are nearly tied in profits, while all teams are reasonably close in unit sales. Team A3 has discontinued it's second product. Remember to carefully review your financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 9: It continues to be a very close competitive situation. No position changes occurred in current profits, but A3 takes a very slight edge in current sales. Remember to carefully review your financial results, new annual budgets and the production reports before revising plans for the next period.

Period 10: Sorry about the long delay in posting the results, but I've been having internet connection problems most of the day. Teams A1 & A3 retain the lead as we approach the final turn. See you Saturday.

Period 11: No significant trend changes this period. Relative positions remain the same.

Final Results:  Despite a money losing start, Team A1 captured the lead by mid game, and never really gave it up past that point.  Check your individual files and the results links above to see details. This was an aggressive set of competitors, and all did reasonably well, considering the budget difficulties occurring after the launch of the second product. See you in class.

Please Note

In order to be fair to the teams that submit their decision files on time, any decision files not submitted by the due date and time (see instructions above), will cause a deduction of $100,000 from your profit score. If the file is more than 2 hours late, I may have to use the decision file from the previous period and also deduct $100,000. You will not be able to go back and correct this later.

I will send a confirmation of the files I have received within one day and will attempt to email you if I have not received your team's file by the deadline. If you are unable to respond with the correct file very rapidly, I have no choice but to proceed with the simulation using your team's prior period decisions.
