Jungle

At the East of the Andes lay the Ecuadorian Amazon's lush and tropical forests, which cover two thirds of the country's surface. Rivers running down the mountainsides have carried rich minerals to the flatlands below, which are used for agriculture. Annual temperatures here average 77 F.

Rain falls almost evenly along the year with 300 to 400 cm of annual rainfall, however from December to February the weather is drier.

The vegetation is dense, with tall trees, some over 45 meters high. Cinnamon tree is common here, along other exotic trees such as silk tree, jacaranda and legume tree. The flat alluvial lands are covered with a great variety of palm trees.

The main tourist attraction is the Napo River, one of the largest tributaries of the Amazon River. The Napo is 1,400 km long and as wide as 5 km. The 130 isles along the river are covered with young forests and provide refuge and nesting grounds to a variety of birds and other animal species.
