Zhou Yu of Shucheng was the close friend and advisor to Sun Ce and later Sun Quan. His skill at strategy and politics led Sun Ce at his death to reccomend to his brother "for internal affairs, turn to Zhang Zhao; for outer matters you must consult Zhou Yu". Zhou Yu is largely responsible for the spectacular defeat of Cao Cao at Chi Bi, during which Cao Cao's navy was ravaged by fire.
Zhou Yu was described as "a dashing leader of handsome and refined mien". He was a cultured, sophisticated man highly skilled in tactics, whose only weakness was his conceit.
Throughout his life, Zhou Yu's rival Zhuge Liang of Shu was a source of distress to the young strategist. Zhou Yu's inability to accept the younger Zhuge Liang as the greater strategist anguished him, leading to his death from an arrow wound that never healed properly. Zhou Yu died with the words "O God, since thou made Zhou Yu, why did thou also create Zhuge Liang?"
