Lu Meng of Ru Nan was a steadfast officer of Wu, a warrior and a scholar. He was fair and righteous, forbidding his own troops from pillaging and enforcing his rules strictly. He even executed a friend for stealing a hat from a villager.
Lu Meng hatched the plot to capture Guan Yu on a trail north of Maicheng. The plan succeeded, and Guan Yu was captured and executed. However, before he died Guan Yu said "If I cannot slay [Lu Meng] while I live, I will after I am dead. My hate shall not go unappeased", and his words came true. At the feast in Lu Meng's honor, Guan Yu's spirit possessed Lu Meng and killed him.
