Xiahou Dun described Dian Wei as "the boldest of the bold, the strongest of the strong". Xiahou Dun recruited Dian Wei for Cao Coa's army after meeting him in a forest. Dian Wei was an exceptionally powerful man. In the novel he wielded two 120 pound spears, one in each hand.
As the bodyguard of Cao Cao he served faithfully and well. At Wancheng during Zhang Xiu's surprise night attack, Dian Wei bravely fended off soldiers at the front door with only his two bare fists. Though he died of his wounds that night, Cao Cao was able to escape safely. When Cao Cao heard that his bodyguard had died he said "I have lost my firstborn son, but I grieve not so heavily for him as for Dian Wei. I weep for him!".
