Zhang Jiao was from the county of Julu and had two brothers named Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang. One day while walking in the woods Zhang Jiao met a strange hermit who gave him a book called "The Book of Heaven". The hermit instructed Zhang Jiao to rescue mankind by converting them all to the Way of Peace and then disappeared.
Zhang Jiao followed the hermit's instructions. A pestilence afflicted the land in the year 184 A.D., and Zhang Jiao came to prominence using magical remedies to cure the people. He accumulated many followers, who all wore yellow turbans (scarves) on their heads. Zhang Jiao gave himself the name "General of Heaven" and lead a rebellion against the emperor. Through the efforts of He Jin, Cao Caoand Lui Bei, among others, the rebellion was stamped out and Zhang Jiao was killed, though the Yellow Turbans continued to disrupt the peace for some time.
