Diao Chan was a "pretty and clever" handmaid from Wang Yun's household. Regarded almost as a daughter by Wang Yun, she was instrumental in the plot to destroy Dong Zhuo. Her role was to seduce both Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo so that Lu Bu would kill his adopted father and thus prevent Dong Zhuo from deposing the Emperor. The plan suceeded, and Lu Bu murdered his adopted father, then took Diao Chan as his concubine. Diao Chan's fate after Lu Bu's death is not known. Among the stories I have heard, one says that Dong Zhuo's followers killed her and her father, another says that Guna Yu, Liu Bei and Zhang Fei argued over who would claim her, but in the end Guan Yu slew her to end the strife between the brothers.
Diao Chan is apparently never mentioned in historical records, so some people believe that she never actually existed.
