Tuzla
Tuzla, situated on the south - east slopes of the Majevica mountain,
occupies the central area of north - east Bosnia. Two minor rivers, Jala
and Solina, run through the town. The elevation of the town is 239 meter
above sea level, and it occupies an area of approximately 15 square
kilometer. According to the last available statistics befor 1991, the
town has a population of approximately 100 000, while the greater
municipal area has 170 000 inhabitants. It's the fourth biggest town in
Bosnia and Herzegovina and it's the economic, scientific, cultural,
educational, health and tourist center of north-eastern Bosnia.
The mineral water springs Salt Water Spa and Kiseljak are among the
significant natural resources of Tuzla. The underground exploatation of
mineral raw materials, which has been going on in this area in the past
several decades has caused a considerable subsiding of terrain in the
town and the places the ground has subsided up to 10 meter. This has
brought about tearing down of many buildings, especially objects of old
architecture, which in turn change the character of the town to a
considerable extent. Many famous streets, squares and neighbourhoods of
old Tuzla have disappeared. In recent years much efforts has been put
into a planned revitalization of these areas to bring life back into
them. One of the projects that have been realized was also old "Cesma"
rebuilt few years ago situated in the center of the town.
Tuzla is a university and educational center with several organization
providing university, high school and pre-school education. The active
cultural professional organizations and institutions in Tuzla include
the National Theater, The Portrait Gallery, The Ismet Mujezinovic's
Gallery, The Museum, The Library, The Historic Archives, The Youth
Center, The Cultural - Sports Center "Mejdan",
