Online List Selection Exercise

OK, now that you've seen how to find and review online mailing lists and datacards in class, here is your chance to practice on your own. Just use your natural creativity to prepare a report that briefly illustrates your results on the following individual project:

1. Select a product you would like to market directly to consumers.  If you prefer, you can just make one up. Either way, please be very specific as you describe your product, identifying all major benefits to the consumer.

2. Think about the types of people that might be interested in this product or service. Then, write down a detailed listing of the demographics for this target market. At a minimum you should list the age, income range, geographic location, and family characteristics of the target group.

3. Use these product and target market descriptions to complete the following:

A) A headcount of the total number of qualifying households, and the cost of an appropriate list from the ALC's online National Consumer Database or other database from that site if it is more appropriate (go to the ALCLists link on the Online Data Card page of the class website. Then click the link to the appropriate database). Please print and attach a copy of the Estimated Pricing page only (the pop-up showing the cost per thousand, the total cost and the counts) to document your work.

B) Pick a magazine or catalog that you think the target market would be likely to read or order from using the ALCData or HippoDirect websites. Summarize the selections you would make from the list and calculate the cost per thousand of using that list. Print and attach a copy of the data card for the selected magazine or catalog.

C) Locate an email list that might work for the target market. Again, make appropriate selections and calculate the cost per thousand. Print and attach a copy of the email data card.

For A - C, include a short statement describing why these are appropriate lists or data cards for your product and target market.
